Mobile Key (Hotel Digital Key)
Last updated:
In short
A mobile key (or digital key) is a credential that allows a hotel guest to unlock their assigned room from a smartphone — usually via Bluetooth Low Energy, NFC, or a one-time PIN delivered through a web portal. It replaces a physical keycard.
Mobile Key (Hotel Digital Key)
Mobile keys took a decade to mature. Early implementations required hotels to install single-vendor lock systems and forced guests to download a branded app. The 2026 standard removes both constraints: the dominant approach uses a vendor-agnostic API like Seam that integrates with 100+ lock brands, and credential delivery happens via the same web-based guest portal that already handles room service and check-in — no app required. PIN-based credentials work even when Bluetooth fails. The remaining lock-side challenges: aging mechanical locks need a retrofit upgrade (€150-€500 per door), and battery management is non-trivial across 50+ doors. Where the lock infrastructure exists, mobile key is now table stakes for contactless check-in.
Why it matters
Front desk wait time consistently rates as the lowest-satisfaction touchpoint. Mobile key removes the queue entirely for guests who have completed online check-in. For night arrivals, it removes the need to staff the desk overnight.
How Guestivo helps
Frequently asked questions
Through Seam, virtually all major hotel lock brands: Salto, Yale, Schlage, ASSA ABLOY, dormakaba, Onity, Tesa, and many more. Direct integrations to individual brands also exist.
Either issue a backup physical key at the desk on request, or fall back to a one-time PIN sent via SMS that the guest enters on the lock keypad. PIN fallback is preferred for true contactless flow.
Not in modern implementations. The credential lives in a QR-launched web portal. The few cases where a native app is required are typically tied to NFC-based locks that lack a web-PIN fallback.
