Hotel Booking Lead Time

Last updated:

In short

Hotel booking lead time is the number of days between when a reservation is made and the arrival date. Average lead time varies by segment: business 0-7 days, leisure 30-90 days, corporate groups 60-180 days, wedding groups 6-12 months.

Hotel Booking Lead Time

Lead time is one of the most diagnostic distribution metrics. Shifts in average lead time often signal demand changes before they show up in pace or pickup. A lengthening lead time (guests booking further ahead) signals strong forward demand or strong forecast confidence; the right response is often higher rates and tighter availability. A shortening lead time (guests booking closer to arrival) signals weaker forward demand or hesitation; the right response can be lower last-minute rates or stronger advance-purchase discounts to lock in commitment earlier. Lead time also drives rate plan strategy. Advance Purchase rate plans target the long-lead-time segment with 15-25% discount in exchange for early commitment. Last-Minute Mobile rates target the short-lead-time segment with discount for filling unsold inventory.

Why it matters

Lead time is a leading indicator that often predicts pace and pickup shifts. Hotels that monitor it monthly catch demand changes 30-60 days earlier than those that only watch pace.

Frequently asked questions

Highly market-dependent. European urban boutique: 25-45 days average. Resort: 60-120 days. Business hotel: 5-15 days. Wedding/group: 6-12 months.

Most PMSes report it. Average over a rolling 30 days; compare to same period last year. Significant shifts (>15%) warrant attention.

Demand is weakening or buyers are hesitating. Consider direct booking incentives, advance purchase discounts, or selective rate drops to lock in commitment.
